I got a message from an old classmate who had a new cocktail and was curious about it. Here it is Steph:
Black Mamba
- 1 1/2 oz vodka
- Rootbeer
Mix ingredients over ice in a highball glass.
Yep, that is really all it is. I checked several different places and we all had the same recipe.

I think they must have just stolen the black mamba name. I’m pretty sure my drink was tequila based, with a cherry liquor and some kind of hot pepper spice. Although I might try your recipe above too…
I really wouldn’t consider it stealing the name. It is pretty darn common that drinks differ from region to region, from city to city and even from bar to bar within a given city. It is not uncommon to have a drink named exactly the same and have totally different ingredients or for one drink to be called something different in two different bars and yet be made exactly the same way.
You will find that bartenders are pretty creative and flexible when it comes to drink making. All the more reason to find a bartender you like and stick with him or her…
