In 1947, Edwin H. Land invented the Polaroid Land Camera, and instant photography was born. John G. Martin, an executive at the Heublein drinks company, availed himself of one of Land’s handy-dandy devices, and soon he was bar-crawling, taking pictures of bartenders holding a bottle of the firm’s newly acquired Smirnoff Vodka in one hand and a copper Moscow Mule mug in the other.

Dr. Bamboo: Tales of the Cocktail: Random Observations

My favorite line:

- Someone created vodka that tastes like cupcakes. Which reminds of the saying, “Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should.”

I actually worked the Cupcake room and passed when offered free samples…

Tales of the Cocktail: Random Observations

So here it is a few weeks after Tales of the Cocktail. Much as I did two years ago, I find myself sifting through notes and compiling a loose collection of info from the event. It’s difficult to do justice to a five-day booze extravaganza with just a few words, but hopefully what I’ve listed below can help illustrate a small fraction of what takes place. Just like last time, I call this handful of disjointed thoughts…

Masters of Mixology: Don the Beachcomber

Ernest Raymond Beaumont Gantt, born 1907, was raised in New Orleans and grew up to become a restless world traveler. The tradewinds fetched him to Los Angeles just as Prohibition was drawing to an end, and in 1934, he rented a tiny 25-seat bar. He decorated it economically with the flotsam he’d gathered in the South Pacific, along with driftwood and fishing floats washed up on California beaches.

Gantt stocked his bar with inexpensive West Indies rums, which were available in absurd abundance after Repeal, and invented an array of faux-tropical drinks, using fruit juices and unfamiliar liqueurs. His philosophy was simple: “If you can’t get to paradise, I’ll bring it to you.”

He called the place Don the Beachcomber’s. And with that, Gantt—who legally renamed himself Donn Beach—started the tiki-cocktail trend that has, remarkably, survived eight decades.

If plastic soda bottles are piling up in your recycling bin, perhaps it’s time to make your own seltzer maker! With a little tinkering and the right components, you can build a contraption to dispense the bubbly stuff with the help of painter and seltzer enthusiast Randy Stoltzfus.

Once your carbonated water is at the ready, a whole world of spritzers, sodas, ades, punches, and other effervescent beverages is at your fingertips. Try making an infused simple syrup or plum and ginger carbonated juice, then top it all off with a mustache drink topper, if you feel so inclined.

Behind the Drink: The $13 Cocktail

Posted WEDNESDAY AUGUST 10, 2011

The best bars in America serve amazing classic and original drinks made with the freshest ingredients, the finest alcohol and a bewildering selection of ice. But often what’s even more attention-grabbing is the price. It’s not unusual to spend $13 or more per cocktail.

While at first blush that seems rather high, what most people don’t take into account is all the hard work and hours of preparation required to produce a perfectly crafted tipple. But instead of us telling you about this process, we thought you’d like to see it for yourself.
